In 2025, the World Health Organization celebrates 17 years of this global campaign. It serves as a great reminder of the importance of hand hygiene in health care and to \u2018bring people together\u2019 in support of hand hygiene improvement globally.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To celebrate World Hand Hygiene Day, here are some hand hygiene do\u2019s and don\u2019ts:&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wash Your Hands the Right Way<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Be sure to lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the \u201cHappy Birthday\u201d song from beginning to end twice.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use hot water to wash hands. It tends to promote chapping which can make hands more susceptible to bacteria.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Run water over hands when lathering.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Touch the sink surface after washing hands.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Skip handwashing if you don\u2019t have soap and water. An alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol can be a replacement (see below)\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>When to Wash Your Hands<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Before, during, and after preparing food\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Before eating food\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Before and after caring for someone who is sick\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Before and after treating a cut or wound\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>After using the toilet\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>After touching an animal, animal feed, or animal waste\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>After handling pet food or pet treats\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>After touching garbage\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Clean your hands anytime they are dirty\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>When to Use Hand Sanitizer<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Washing hands with soap and water is the best way to reduce the number of germs on them. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers can quickly reduce the number of germs on hands in many situations, but sanitizers do not eliminate all types of germs.
