How to Clean Upholstered Furniture

Upholstered furniture brings warmth, comfort, and personality to any home—but its inviting softness also makes it a magnet for dust, crumbs, and the occasional spill. To keep your favorite armchair, sofa, or dining seat looking and smelling fresh, a thoughtful cleaning routine is essential. Whether you’re dealing with daily dust or an unexpected stain, here’s how to refresh and protect the fabric surfaces you love.

Cleaning Spills

  • Choose the Right Cleaner: Follow the fabric care label on the furniture and the directions on the cleaning product label. If you aren’t sure about the cleaner for the fabric, try it on a small, inconspicuous spot first.
  • Blot, Don’t Rub: If a spill occurs, gently blot the area with a clean, dry cloth. Avoid rubbing, which can push the liquid deeper into the fabric fibers.
  • Work from the Outside In: When treating a spot, start at the outer edge of the stain and move toward the center to prevent spreading.
  • Apply a Fabric Protector: After cleaning, applying a fabric protector spray can help repel spills and stains, making future clean-ups easier.

Deep Cleaning

Either annually or a few times a year, deep clean your upholstery to help it stay clean and last longer.

  • Steam Cleaning: If your fabric is compatible, a handheld steam cleaner can lift embedded dirt and refresh fibers. Always let the furniture dry thoroughly before use.
  • Professional Help: For stubborn stains or delicate fabrics, don’t hesitate to call a professional upholstery cleaning service.

Maintenance

  • Vacuum Frequently: Use your vacuum’s upholstery attachment at least once a week. Pay special attention to seams, crevices, and under cushions—these are hotspots for crumbs and pet hair.
  • Rotate Cushions: If your furniture has removable cushions, rotate and flip them regularly to distribute wear evenly and maintain their shape.
  • Set House Rules: Encourage family and guests to avoid eating or drinking on upholstered furniture, or use easy-to-wash throws to guard against everyday messes.

A little regular care goes a long way in preserving the beauty and comfort of your upholstered furniture.
