Allergens Bite the Dust

Asthma and allergy attacks are triggered by tiny airborne particles called allergens. These allergens often lurk in dust mites, animal dander, mold and mildew, and pollen. One way to help control these allergens is to get rid of the dust in your home, as well as the pollen that seeps indoors. Dusting with a dry cloth may make you feel like you are accomplishing something, but all it really does is spread the dust around, leaving it there to act as triggers for family members and guests who suffer from allergies and asthma. Fortunately, there are ways to trap those triggers.

Use a moist cloth. An easy way to do this is to spray with a dusting spray and apply to the desired surface.

Choose microfiber. These cloths are gentle on furniture but can help trap dust. A microfiber duster can also be a good option.

Pick the right tool for the job. For electronics, an electrostatic cloth will help trap dust. For ceiling fans, putting a pillowcase over each blade and sliding it off can keep dust trapped.

Consider dust wipes. Instead of a dusting product and a microfiber cloth, you could choose a dusting wipe that is already moistened and ready to use. This makes clean up really quick.

Follow up with vacuuming. After dusting, vacuum up any dust that spread to the floor. If possible, use a vacuum with a HEPA filter and/or exhaust filter, or use a bag that is designed to hold allergens inside.
