Viruses and illnesses can spread rapidly, but with the right cleaning routine, you can protect your loved ones and help prevent further infection. It’s all about matching the level of cleaning with the level of the germ threat. The American Cleaning Institute has a new resource called the Levels of Clean, which talks about what low, medium and high levels of home cleaning look like. Today, we’re sharing what to look out for when considering moving up a level in cleaning intensity, and handwashing frequency, when the risk of illness increases.
LOW: Normal Routine – Most of the time, a healthy household is low risk and can clean as usual. It can be helpful to keep in mind targeted cleaning on the areas and times that are most likely to prevent common germs. This includes the kitchen, bathroom, and frequently-touched surfaces.
MEDIUM: Extra Steps – If someone in your household is sick with a respiratory illness like COVID-19, the flu, or colds, it can help to take extra precautions to keep others from getting ill. These include initial extra steps like more frequent disinfection in addition to cleaning.
HIGH: Enhanced Precautions – These are times to be extra careful and take all available precautions. It includes when a household member has a weakened immune system or a stomach bug (with vomiting and/or diarrhea). Consider wearing PPE like gloves while cleaning and be sure to wash your hands frequently.
