Cleaning Your Compost Bin: Tips for International Compost Awareness Week

International Compost Awareness Week is the perfect time to refresh your composting routine and ensure your compost bins are in top shape. Regular cleaning not only prevents unpleasant odors, but also supports healthy decomposition, helping you create effective garden compost.

Start by emptying your compost bin or tumbler completely, separating any finished compost from fresh material. Use a sturdy brush and some warm, soapy water to scrub away debris and residue from the sides and bottom. Rinse thoroughly with water and dry before using again. Consider lining the bottom with newspaper or cardboard to absorb moisture and make future cleaning easier.

Don’t forget to clean your countertop compost pail regularly. Empty the pail completely and scrub it with warm, soapy water to remove food residue and prevent odors. It’s a good idea to wash the lid and any removable parts, then let everything air dry before reassembling. It can also help to use a filter designed to trap smells and prevent fruit flies.

Maintaining clean compost containers is a straightforward task that can make a big difference. It helps keep odors at bay and reduces the risk of pests. Celebrate International Compost Awareness Week by giving your compost system a little TLC!
