Reducing the Carbon Footprint of Cleaning

Climate change is one of the most serious threats the world faces. Here at ACI, we recognize that bold action is needed. That’s why we challenged our members to raise ambitions and act on climate now. As the cleaning products industry, we are coming together to limit the global average temperature rise to less than 1.5°C and reach net-zero global emissions by 2050.

This International Day of Climate Action, learn about some of the ways the industry is working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, from when the cleaning products are made to when they’re used.

Manufacturing

Companies across the cleaning products industry are switching to renewable sources to power their manufacturing operations, and a number have made public commitments to go “100% renewable” within specified timeframes.

For example, 100% of Henkel’s U.S. electricity demand is currently covered by renewable energy. To help cover the demand, the company entered into a virtual power purchase agreement to create a new wind farm.

Ingredients

The process of making and transporting the ingredients that go into cleaning products also contributes to the carbon footprint of cleaning. Companies in this part of the supply chain are striving to produce ingredients that will help make the final product more sustainable.

Novozymes, for example, uses biotechnology to optimize enzymes that go into laundry detergent. The enzyme-technology makes it possible to wash clothes at lower temperatures, which saves energy, and allows for a more compact detergent that uses less raw materials, saving the energy that would’ve gone into transporting them.
