How to Clean Small Kitchen Appliances

Small kitchen appliances like blenders, coffee makers, toasters and food processors are essential for everyday cooking, but they often collect grime and residue. Regular cleaning not only keeps these gadgets working efficiently but also ensures your food stays safe and delicious. Here’s a simple guide to cleaning the most common small kitchen appliances.

Blenders and Food Processors

After each use, disassemble your blender or food processor and rinse all removable parts with warm, soapy water. Gently wipe down any part that cannot be removed with a damp cloth, staying away from electrical components. Always dry the parts completely before reassembling.

Coffee Makers

Wipe down the outside with a damp cloth and wash removable parts with dish soap and warm water regularly. Check with the manufacturer, but these parts may even be dishwasher safe. Let parts fully dry before reassembling. To keep your coffee maker in top shape, run a mixture of equal parts water and vinegar through a brewing cycle once a quarter. Follow up with a couple of cycles of clean water to rinse away any vinegar taste.

Toasters and Toaster Ovens

Unplug your toaster or toaster oven and remove the crumb tray. Shake out crumbs and wash the tray with soap and water. Use a soft brush or cloth to gently wipe the interior, avoiding heating elements. For the exterior, a damp cloth works best to remove fingerprints and grease.

Microwaves

Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. It can be helpful to place a microwave-safe bowl filled with water and heat it for a few minutes. The steam will loosen any stuck-on food, making it easy to wipe away with a soft cloth. Use a soft cloth with mild, soapy water. Clean the turntable and wipe down the exterior as well.

Safety Tips

  • Always unplug appliances before cleaning.
  • Never immerse electrical components in water.
  • Refer to your appliance manual for specific cleaning instructions.
