Go Green by Knowing Clean

It takes a lot of energy and resources to produce our possessions. One way to reduce our impact on the planet is by buying less stuff and taking good care of what we already have so that it lasts longer. This maintenance includes regular cleaning. Here’s how you can clean your way to a smaller carbon footprint:

  • Know how frequently the things in your home should be cleaned and follow a schedule. Appliances and other items that are properly cared for will stay in better shape and last longer. Wash bedding, towels and clothes only as often as needed to keep them clean but prevent unnecessary wear and tear.
  • Deal with stains promptly. The longer a stain sits the harder it may be to remove and may result in discarding and replacing.
  • Make sure you’re washing reusables frequently. If you go from disposable to reusable (think water bottles, straws or bags), be sure to wash them regularly, both for your health and the longevity of the reusables.
  • Before replacing or disposing of things that seem past repair, do some research. A dishwasher that no longer does a good job washing dishes may not be broken, but needs some cleaning. A pan that seems ruined might be cleaned with some of our cookware cleaning tips.
  • Know what temperature your water needs to be for cleaning. The fabric label instructions can help. Most of the time, laundry can be done in cold water. The water doesn’t even need to be hot for washing dishes. Reduce the temperature along with your carbon footprint.
