End-of-School Backpack Cleaning

It’s the end of the school year but before you stash those backpacks in a closet until fall and head off on summer adventures, take some time to clean them. A backpack that is well cared for will look better and last longer. And now is the best time to do that cleaning before the stains have all summer to set. Here’s how:

  1. Fully empty the backpack. Check every pocket. Organize and store any supplies that will be needed in the next school year.
  2. Wipe out the bag to remove crumbs and dirt. A vacuum with a brush attachment can also help with this part.
  3. Deal with any stains. A stain remover pen is a good option for small spots. Just try it on a small inconspicuous part of the bag first to make sure it won’t cause any damage. Otherwise, use a damp cloth with a little detergent or gentle liquid soap on it and dab at the stain.
  4. Clean the bag. Your best bet here is to follow the manufacturer’s instructions, which is often on a tag inside the bag. If you can’t find that, use your best judgement. Most backpacks, like canvas ones, can be put in the washer. Leather bags cannot. Clear, plastic bags should be hand washed with soap and water. Remove any dangling straps or cords and hand wash those with water, a little bit of detergent and a brush. Pretreat stains first, let it sit, then turn inside out to wash.
  5. Hang the bag to dry. This will be less wear and tear than putting it in the dryer. Make sure it’s fully dry before storing it.

You will be thanking yourself at the end of the summer when you pull out a clean bag ready to go back to school. When you do, don’t forget to include these cleaning items with your schools supplies.
